Summer Reading Program
Berean Academy students are required to participate in a summer
reading program. This program provides structure and flexibility for
students and parents.
Research on Reading
The following findings serve as motivating factors for having a summer
reading program:
- Background knowledge and reading vocabulary are essential
components of reading comprehension skills. Non-fiction reading
selections often provide rich resources for building background
knowledge and reading vocabulary.
- For young people’s reading skills to improve, they need to read
books that align with their own reading levels. Reading books that
are too easy or too hard won’t help.
- About two-thirds of the academic gap found among ninth graders
can be explained by what happens over the summer during the
elementary school years.
- Parents’ reading behaviors are likely to have the greatest impact
on kids' involvement with books and data suggest most parents
could be doing more to encourage kids to read for fun.
- Four in ten children report reading MORE during the summer.
Most kids who read more during the summer say their parents
encourage them to do so.
- Children who read more during the summer are more apt than
others to perceive themselves as smart and good students.
Reading Lists
Reading lists are available for each grade level; however, elementary
students may choose to read titles that are not on the lists. Before
reading a book that is not on the reading list, parents should confirm the
reading level of the title. The elementary grades' resources to the right
include one way to estimate a title's reading level.
